In the middle of laying out my book: 'An Artist Workbook", Exercises in observation, Memory & Imagination..........there are quotes, photos, and around 40 or so art exercises from my studies as a student, teacher and practicing artist. These exercises are meant as a spring board to pursue color and the art of painting in a new way.

Art
Art, is a bridge to nature, a path that leads us to experience the
dynamics in nature. Such as: life and death, inbreathing and out
breathing, color and form, activity of observation, mirror reflections
from the spiritual world.

Painting…Experience fall through five days of Art
Autumn’s clarity, light changes, coolness, earth’s
aroma, signals an inner soul change from summer’s dreaminess to Michael’s
wakefulness.

Orange & Red arise. A hint of Green,
shimmering. In the periphery overlapping
veils of yellow, red and blue die into grey, contrasting the light. Add Black for weight and wakefulness. Feel the release of light. As outer nature
dies, an inner light appears in the autumn landscape.

Landscape
Painting Retreat August 26 -29
Experience”
Nature through Art” with Jennifer Thomson
The landscape
Retreat is about change; experiencing another way of working. It isn’t a ‘how to” retreat. It is a time to explore new color exercises,
ideas and playfulness. Sometimes one has
to walk through ugliness to find anew.
Sometimes we have to stretch further in art to find a new approach to
our usual way of working.
Mornings for example, explore a fall
exercise: Tint paper orange in
areas creating a color mood. Bring
colors; reds, yellows, blues to wakefulness.
Balance colors compositionally.
Find an inward glow of light. Use
greys and black to enhance the glow.
White in gesture for trees …what next?
Afternoons,
inspired by John Marin’s (1870-1970) & Emil Nolde’s(1867-1956) art,
exercises of their techniques & composition will be practiced and applied
to our own artwork.
Work Space: Sun
Studio & outdoors into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to experience Nature
through direct observation.

Tuition: $275 includes 4 organic veggie lunches,
snacks & supplies
Deposit: $75 nonrefundable, to reserve a space

Metamorphosis
Darkness
& Dawn
Peach blossom, Rose, and Green give luminosity, as ethereal world presents itself to balance the
earthiness of Blacks and Browns. We will
explore lightness and weight through color and the art of painting. The moving colors awaken our own inner
movement and we begin to perceive a motif that condenses from the flowing
color.
Taking the theme of Persephone ( a Greek myth), we will strive to
awaken the motif artistically. Mornings are devoted to this ongoing exercise of watercolor veil
painting. Afternoons, a
variety of artistic exercises devoted to compositional work inspired from Emily
Carr and Lawren Harris’s art. One outing
will be sketching & painting in the National Forest. We will practice techniques from the ‘Group
of 7’ to apply in our own work.

Renew yourself and your life path in contemplation and color in nature’s beauty in the 8000ft.
Alpine Valley of Crestone.
The main importance is silence..listening to nature while you work. Quieting your thoughts and being present. There is an inner peace that finds its way into the soul and an inspiration that carries you to the next piece of art and the next..........jt
